The Year of Meh.... Maybe :)

Back to school. Usually, I think of the old Staples commercial with Andy Williams singing, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year", with the parents gleefully dancing down the aisles, sending their kids back to our care at school. The kids have glum faces. If you don't remember it, or if you can use a smile, you can find it here. This year, I wouldn't be able to see the faces of the kids, because they would be obscured by a mask. Dad would not be holding the handle of the cart because he'd be wiping it with Purell or wearing gloves. However, it gives me delight when I look at this commercial. Every. Single. Time. Theme Work Makes the Dream Work

Pinterest is inundated with amazing classroom themes. This time of year, many blogs, especially those of Elementary teachers are all abuzz with pictures of their amazing classrooms and themes. People are so clever. I love to see their talent on display. I started out in Elementary and have had the privilege of teaching throughout all ages of the school system with some stints as an administrator in between. When people hear me talk about my classroom theme, they are always surprised to hear that I am a high school Math teacher. Always. Can you guess what my theme this year might be? All aboard to find out the what and the why. I'm sure you'll want my justification and explanation for my investment in my class environment. That's right. (Insert your own train whistle here). It's GO time. I don't know why, but I kept thinking in the back of my mind that once everyone showed up at school, the powers that be would realize we needed more time to get this show on the road. But there I stood today in a socially distant line with my teacher tribe, waiting to have a long Q-tip swab thing shoved up each of my nostrils to give parents an assurance that I am virus free. For now. People were nervous. You could feel it. But, we dutifully stuck our noses out--literally and figuratively. It's GO time. My fantasy thoughts of postponing for a week to get all of the tech issues and practical issues ironed out turned to ash today. My room is pretty, but the list of things and adaptations still to be accomplished is endless. Truly, truly endless. However, in a commitment to myself, I am making this post, this blog, a priority above the list. Then, I'm going to look across the couch and smile at my husband and make some small talk.
