I’ve been watching nonstop since October. I know the stories are very similar. I know the acting is not always superb. I know that real life is not depicted in these movies. I don’t care. I love to watch them – simple or not. I love to rewatch them. Because Hallmark movies have tapped into something in many of us – – the need for good to prevail, the need for kindness to be supreme and the need for beauty to be evident. In a world where we are confronted in every form of media with every type of sad, discouraging news, it feels good to have a happy world to view.
School this time of year is often fraught with difficult situations. Dissatisfied teachers, maladjusted students, overcrowded classrooms, unhappy parents, and a teacher who was too sick to attend to the rest of this article in a timely manner. 🙂 Thank you, bronchitis.
However, I wanted to finish this idea as we approach the new year. We need a way to keep our heads above the reality of the day and our eyes on the hope and promise of what can be, not what currently seems to be. Isn’t that the reason we got into this line of work anyway? I need a little Hallmark idealism when faced with some of the annoying, frustrating and discouraging aspects of the world in which we live and when faced with the things our students encounter daily – things to which I would never have been exposed at their age.
As I sit down today and map out the next semester, I want to keep my perspective one that realizes the current condition, but recognizes the opportunity to make a difference in my little corner of the world. As you wind down from 2019, and gear up for 2020, I hope your perspective is clear as well. 20 /20 vision to be cliche about it.
OK, now I’ve got to get back to the last airing (at least until Friday nights in January) of the Christmas Prince.
