Brokenhearted. Parents who lost their child. Parents who are relieved, yet angry, yet heartbroken, are looking for answers and wondering how they can send their kids to school again. Parents whose community has been ripped and shattered. Parents whose son did the unthinkable. Also brokenhearted and no doubt wondering what could have gone wrong. Everyone mourning the loss of two young people from their midst. Everyone is concerned for the many injured in addition to those murdered.
Teachers across the country have their hearts in their throats. If it can happen in Kentucky, it can happen here. We are all being trained on the what to dos and the what ifs should the unthinkable happen.
I had a family member beg me to promise that I would not put myself in harm's way in that situation. I can only say that I don't want to make that promise because I want all of us to make it out safely if the unthinkable happens. I trust that I would have a measure of grace if that situation ever materialized, God forbid. I trust that our training would be sufficient and our plan be doable and effective.
It's so sad to know that a member of the school body was responsible. We have got to keep on message with our students. Love one another. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We have to keep trying to stop these tragedies before someone ever gets to the point that they become violent toward another. We, as teachers, can't be all things to all students, I know, but we have to keep trying.
I'm going tomorrow to class and give it all I have to influence my students toward love and kindness toward all mankind in honor of the two students who left this earth today through the violent act of a classmate. Rest in peace, Bailey Nicole Holt and Preston Ryan Cope.
